Nightstand Dimensions: Height, Width and Depth With 10 Product Examples

Compare ten manufacturer-listed nightstands, match usable height to your mattress and calculate cabinet width after leaving bed and wall gaps.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Use 23–28 inches tall as a shopping range, then measure your mattress top. Nightstand widths and depths vary widely: the ten examples here are 15⅜–20⅞ inches wide and 13¾–18⅛ inches deep. Beside the bed, subtract your chosen bed gap and any wall allowance from the available side strip before choosing a cabinet.

What does standard nightstand size mean?

Wayfair’s sizing guide calls 23–28 inches high, 21–28 inches wide and 16–20 inches deep standard. That is a retailer’s category, not a size every bed needs. All ten IKEA examples below are narrower than its standard-width band.

WidthWidest outside point from side to sideFit between bed and wall after leaving gaps

Compare like measurements. Overall height can include a raised back or rim above the main surface. Overall depth may differ from usable drawer depth, and a top can overhang the cabinet below. Check the manufacturer’s drawing and the surface you will actually reach.

Seven of these ten models fall within the 23–28-inch height band. Their widths are all under 21 inches, showing why a narrow model can be a practical choice beside a larger bed. Choose enough top surface for your lamp base and essentials without filling the entire side strip.

Match the height to your mattress

Measure from the finished floor to the top of your mattress, including the topper you use. Start with a nightstand surface near that height, then try reaching from your normal sleeping or reading position. A thick mattress on a low frame can need a different nightstand from a thin mattress on the same frame.

In the illustration, the mattress top is 24 inches high and the TARVA top is 24⅜ inches. That small difference is easy to compare before buying. It does not establish a comfortable reach for everyone: the lamp, drawer handle and items you use also need to be within reach.

Wayfair suggests a top level with the mattress or up to four inches above it. Treat that as a starting point to try, rather than a requirement to buy taller furniture. For a low bed, begin with the shorter examples; for a higher bed, measure the finished mattress height before filtering for tall models.

Calculate the width that fits beside the bed

Measure the bed frame’s widest point, including an upholstered edge or projecting headboard. Then measure the clear strip on each side. If the bed is centered, each strip is half the room width left after subtracting the frame; an off-center bed needs two separate measurements.

Maximum nightstand width = available side strip − selected bed gap − wall allowance. The wall allowance covers the space you choose to leave for trim, installation and access. It can differ on each side.

Same room and frame25 in4 in to bed; 1 in to wall20 in
120 in room, 64 in queen frame28 in4 in to bed; 2 in to wall22 in

Wayfair suggests 3–6 inches between bed and nightstand for reach and bedding. Choose and test your gap before doing the subtraction. A 25-inch cabinet uses the whole 25-inch strip in the first example and leaves no bed gap at all.

Queen frame 64×84″22″22″116″ in all
Head-end excerpt: an assumed 64 × 84 in queen frame, two 22 in cabinets and two 4 in bed gaps use 116 in, leaving 2 in at each wall in a 120 in room. Doors and the foot of the room are not shown.

The illustrated queen arrangement uses 64 + 22 + 22 + 4 + 4 = 116 inches. Replacing those cabinets with two 18⅞-inch TARVAs gives 109¾ inches before any outer wall allowances. Both calculations use an assumed 64-inch frame; measure your actual frame.

A width calculation covers only the head of the bed. Check the cabinet’s depth, the route beside it and its drawer or door fully open. Follow the product’s anchoring instructions where required. For full-room checks, use the 10×10 bedroom layouts or the smaller 9×10 examples.

If a second cabinet crowds the room, a smaller surface or one nightstand may be more useful than two equal pieces. The bedroom storage guide compares other locations for the belongings a drawer would hold.

Questions

What is the standard nightstand height?

Wayfair uses 23–28 inches as its standard-height category. Your mattress-top measurement is the better starting point; the ten listed examples range from 19¼ to 29⅞ inches overall.

What size nightstand works with a queen bed?

Use the actual frame width and side strips. In the illustrative 120-inch room, a centered 64-inch frame leaves 28 inches per side. Reserving 4 inches to the bed and 2 to the wall allows a 22-inch cabinet.

How deep should a nightstand be?

Deep enough for the items on top, with room to move beside it and open its storage. The examples here range from 13¾ to 18⅛ inches overall; drawer interiors are smaller and need a separate check.

Can a nightstand be higher than the mattress?

It can, if you can comfortably reach what you need. Try the height and distance together from the bed; a tall surface farther away may be harder to use than the height alone suggests.

Final Takeaway

Match the usable top to your mattress height and choose the width from the space left after gaps. Then check depth and open storage. These measurements are more useful than matching a nightstand to the bed’s size label alone.
